Navratri Garba, India-Australia Music & UK’s Weirdest Traditions | Wings EP149
This week on WION Wings, we celebrate the colour and energy of Navratri, experience a rare India-Australia musical collaboration in New Delhi, discover some of Britain’s quirkiest traditions, and travel to ancient Babylon for a major cultural festival. Navratri brings communities together with devotion, music and dance. We experience the energy of Garba, one of the festival’s most recognisable traditions, as dancers move in colourful circles to rhythmic music during celebrations of the Hindu festival. From traditional attire to large community gatherings, Garba turns Navratri into one of India’s most visually spectacular festive experiences. At New Delhi’s historic Purana Qila, two ancient musical traditions meet on one stage. Australian First Nations composer, vocalist and didgeridoo virtuoso William Barton joins Indian sitar maestro Pandit Shubhendra Rao for Sacred Pathways: Where Ragas Meet Songlines. Supported by the Australian Government and India’s Ministry of Culture, the four-city tour brings together the didgeridoo and sitar in a cross-cultural musical conversation connecting Australia and India.
Next, we head to the United Kingdom for traditions that range from competitive to wonderfully unusual. Skiers attempt to race with blocks of ice strapped to their feet. Nail artists compete with elaborate fantasy creations. Competitors battle for glory at the World Conker Championships. And sheep return to central London in a tradition with roots stretching back to the medieval period.
In Iraq, the ancient city of Babylon becomes the setting for a festival celebrating culture, art and heritage. Performers and artists gather at one of the world’s great archaeological sites, bringing contemporary cultural expression into a landscape shaped by thousands of years of history.
