Beneath the waves off the Mahabalipuram shoreline lies a mysterious lost city believed to date back over 1,200–1,500 years to the time of the Pallava Empire. For centuries, local legends spoke of the “Seven Pagodas” — magnificent temples that once stood along the coast before being swallowed by the sea.After the 2004 tsunami briefly pulled the ocean back, hidden ruins and ancient structures were spotted on the seabed. This sparked major underwater investigations by marine archaeologists and the National Institute of Oceanography. Through deep-sea dives, sonar mapping, and underwater exploration, researchers discovered massive stone walls, platforms, quarry marks, and architectural remains buried beneath the ocean floor.
These findings suggest that Mahabalipuram was once part of a much larger and thriving ancient port city that gradually disappeared due to centuries of coastal erosion and rising sea levels.
