Kings and Generals animated historical series on the history of early modern period, Iranian and Muslim empires continues with a video on Nader shah. How did a poor herdsman’s son become Nader Shah—the “Napoleon of Persia”—and build the most feared army in Asia? This complete history documentary follows his astonishing rise from the chaos of the collapsing Safavid Empire to victories over Afghan, Ottoman, Mughal, and Caucasian forces.
Watch Nader transform scattered fighters into a disciplined gunpowder army, reclaim Isfahan, outmaneuver the Ottomans, and seize Iran’s throne. Then enter his bold invasion of India, where strategy and firepower shattered the Mughal army at the Battle of Karnal before the capture and sack of Delhi. The campaign brought Nader an almost unbelievable fortune, including the Peacock Throne, but marked the peak of an empire already straining under endless war. Beyond the famous Indian invasion, the documentary reconstructs Nader’s campaigns at Herat, Mehmandost, Murche-Khort, Samarra, Kirkuk, Arpachay, Kandahar, Karnal, Dagestan, and Kars. Animated battle maps reveal how rapid marches, disciplined musketeers, heavy jezayer rifles, camel-mounted artillery, and carefully timed cavalry attacks repeatedly defeated larger armies. It also explains the politics behind his victories: the collapse of Safavid authority, Tahmasp II’s failures, Nader’s seizure of the regency, the creation of the Afsharid dynasty, and his controversial religious policy. Each triumph expanded his power, but also increased the taxes, exhaustion, and fear that ultimately turned allies, commanders, relatives, and subjects against him. The final chapters reveal the darker transformation: punishing taxes, failed campaigns, rebellion, paranoia, the blinding of his son Reza Qoli, and the conspiracy that ended his life in 1747. Was Nader Shah Persia’s greatest military genius, its last great conqueror, or a ruler destroyed by his own ambition? Explore the rise and fall of the Afsharid Empire—and the man who dramatically changed Iranian, Ottoman, Mughal, and world history from the eighteenth century and beyond.
