Algeria vs Nigeria | EXTENDED HIGHLIGHTS AFCON 2025 | 01/10/2026 | beIN SPORTS USA

The difference made by Victor Osimhen—with one goal and one assist—ultimately defined Nigeria national football team’s clear superiority over Algeria national football team. Nigeria won with authority and merit, creating more chances and finishing better, and returned to the semifinals of the Africa Cup of Nations, where they will face Morocco—the host nation—on Wednesday in Rabat.

Eric Chelle’s side will contest an AFCON semifinal for the 17th time—an unmatched record. On seven previous occasions, Nigeria progressed to the final, including the last edition, when they finished runners-up. The Super Eagles’ history includes three continental titles, although the most recent came in South Africa in 2013.

Nigeria ended Algeria’s campaign. Vladimir Petković’s team failed to move beyond the quarterfinals, though their showing did represent an improvement on recent tournaments, having exited at the group stage in the last two editions following their 2019 title—their second and most recent championship.

Nigeria’s dominance was evident, and the scoreline could have been more emphatic. Algeria escaped a heavier defeat largely due to Nigeria’s lack of early precision. Goalkeeper Luca Zidane initially kept his side alive, denying Ademola Lookman—Nigeria’s most active attacker early on—and later responding to the constant threat posed by Osimhen, the standout performer with a goal and an assist.

Still, a poor decision by Zidane nearly cost Algeria before the half-hour mark. From a set piece, he misjudged the delivery and allowed Calvin Bassey a free header at the back post with the goal gaping. Ramy Bensebaini intervened heroically on the goal line to keep the ball out.

Every Nigerian attack caused Algeria problems. The first half ended with Alex Iwobi crossing for Akor Adams, who found himself one-on-one with Zidane but sent his effort over the bar.

It felt inevitable—and the second half confirmed it. From the first clear chance after the restart, everything changed. A cross from the left by Bruno Onyemaechi was met perfectly by Osimhen, who headed home from close range to beat Zidane and open the scoring.

Ten minutes later, the match was settled. A midfield turnover led to a superb through ball from Iwobi to Osimhen. Showing great vision and unselfishness, the Galatasaray striker squared the ball for Akor Adams, who rounded the goalkeeper and finished into an empty net.

The contest was effectively over, though the damage could have been greater. Akor Adams struck the post with a header nine minutes from time. Algeria never truly responded, offering only isolated efforts. Nigeria saw the game out comfortably and booked their place against Morocco in the semifinals.
