Seven Chinese nationals have been sentenced to 20 years in prison for human trafficking and forced labour in South Africa. The convicts were arrested in 2019 after a police raid on a Johannesburg factory called “Beautiful City”. An investigation revealed that between 2017 and 2019, the factory had employed 91 undocumented Malawians, including over a dozen children aged between 14 and 16. The victims were reportedly smuggled into South Africa and forced to work 11-hour shifts, seven days a week, for below minimum wage. They were confined to the premises under armed guard, with no holidays or outside food. Personal communication was banned, and the migrants were made to work on defective machines without protective gear, with some losing their eyesight and limbs as a result.---
