Dans les Alpes autrichiennes, les habitants de Bad Gastein se plaisent à raconter le quotidien de la petite ville thermale au cours des XIXe et XXe siècles, exhibant les souvenirs des visites de l’empereur Guillaume Ier, Sissi, Sigmund Freud et Thomas Mann, puis du chah d'Iran ou encore de stars du showbiz, comme Charles Aznavour et Ray Charles. Mais à la fin des années 1980, Bad Gastein connaît une crise financière sans précédent. Alors que certaines de ses prestigieuses institutions tombent en ruine, des hommes et des femmes décident de réinventer la vie de la station et de la moderniser, attirant à nouveau d’importantes personnalités.
