Invisible Care: Designing Homes for Aging with Dignity | Yanmin Zhou | TEDxShenzhen

Many families don’t think about home safety until it's too late—a slip in the bathroom, a late-night trip, or that one sudden accident that changes everything. Why do we wait for frailty to set in before taking action?

In this heartfelt talk, architect Zhou Yanmin challenges our reactive approach to aging. Drawing on years of intimate home visits and the experience of redesigning her own parents' house, she advocates for a radical shift: adapting our homes while our parents are still healthy. Without giving away her ingenious design secrets, she reveals how we can seamlessly integrate safety features into everyday furniture and layouts, ensuring the home doesn't end up looking like a sterile clinic. She demonstrates how subtle, invisible design choices can act as silent guardians—protecting our parents' dignity, independence, and everyday peace of mind long before the first fall ever happens. Zhou Yanmin is a National First-Class Registered Architect and a Professor at Tsinghua University. As a leading pioneer in age-friendly and inclusive design, she has dedicated her career to transforming how we build homes for older adults. She has played a pivotal role in shaping China’s national standards for senior living, advised on over 100 residential and eldercare developments, and authored more than 20 books on the subject. Bridging architectural rigor with deep human empathy, Professor Zhou’s work focuses on creating living spaces that protect the safety, independence, and dignity of our aging population. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me
