Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on Modern Affairs continues with a video on the Indo-Pakistani war of 1971. The Third Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 was not about Kashmir but the crisis in East Pakistan, which ultimately led to the creation of Bangladesh. This video explores the roots of the conflict, from the Bengali Language Movement and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Six-Point Program to the Pakistani military’s brutal Operation Searchlight. Millions of refugees fled to India, and the Mukti Bahini waged guerrilla warfare, gradually weakening Pakistani control. The war officially began on December 3, 1971, when Pakistan launched preemptive airstrikes, attempting to cripple India’s air power. But India quickly gained air and naval superiority, launching decisive offensives on both the Western and Eastern fronts. On the Western front, Pakistan failed to achieve its objectives in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan, suffering a major defeat at Longewala. In the East, the Indian Army’s rapid multi-pronged advance encircled Dhaka. Pakistani forces, outnumbered and cut off from reinforcements, surrendered on December 16, 1971, marking India’s first decisive victory over Pakistan and the birth of Bangladesh.
