Le braccia incrociate dei leader europei sono state sciolte dalle esistenti logiche di geopolitica, che in un quadro come quello russo-ucraino prevedono, almeno in quest'era storica, gli USA come Paese "più forte". Di recente sono volati a Washington Macron e Starmer, entrambi con qualcosa da ridire sulla priorità di Trump: terminare la guerra. Il clima è rimasto però sempre tranquillo, in linea con gli incontri tra capi di Stato. Sfumate le dure critiche lanciate dai premier europei, di quando hanno scoperto l'incontro diplomatico USA-Russia in Arabia, dal quale è nata la riunione con von der Leyen.
Trump, dice il primo ministro inglese, ha aperto "una finestra di enorme opportunità per raggiungere un accordo di pace storico". Fallito però l'approccio di Starmer, che voleva convincere il tycoon ad acconsentire alle operazioni di "peacekeeping" (tradotto: mandare soldati in Ucraina). Il premier laburista ha ricevuto un altro no: quello del vicepresidente USA J.D. Vance, che era intervenuto il 14 febbraio alla conferenza sulla sicurezza di Monaco parlando contro le violazioni della libertà di parola in Gran Bretagna.
Una giornalista, durante l'incontro tra Trump e Starmer alla Casa Bianca, ha rievocato il tema. Trump fa rispondere direttamente il suo vice.
