LH, hipofiz bezinden salgılanır ve testiste Leydig hücrelerini uyararak testosteron üretimini destekler. Testosteron ve östradiol düzeyleri yükseldiğinde ise geri bildirim mekanizmasıyla LH salgısı baskılanır.
Bu nedenle LH yüksek, testosteron düşükse testisin yeterli yanıt veremediği bir tablo düşünülebilir. Özellikle yaşla birlikte gelişen testis fonksiyon kaybında bu durum görülebilir.
LH yüksek fakat testosteron normalse, vücudun testosteronu normal düzeyde tutabilmek için daha fazla LH salgıladığı kompanse bir dönem söz konusu olabilir.
LH düşük veya normal olduğu halde testosteron düşükse ise hipotalamus veya hipofiz kaynaklı nedenler ayrıca değerlendirilmelidir.
LH sonucu tek başına yorumlanmamalıdır. Gerektiğinde FSH, testosteron, östradiol, inhibin B ve spermiogram gibi diğer testlerle birlikte değerlendirme yapılmalıdır.
