Disco Elysium - Review | A New Standard For RPGs
A no-spoilers* review/critique/analysis of Disco Elysium: Final Cut, one of the best RPGs of all time. This unique point-and-click adventure by ZA/UM was inspired by games like Planescape: Torment and Pillars of Eternity, wherein it emphasizes character-based role-playing through a novel set of skills that act as elements of your personality, like your ability to empathize with other people or to appreciate art. You can also shape your character through "thoughts" which give extra narrative backstory and various statistical modifiers. As an RPG, this video game strongly captures the core essence of tabletop role-playing by more closely simulating the freeform, adaptive style of narrative storytelling you get from pen-and-paper RPGs, while also offering unprecedented depth in character builds and ways to effect your character's personality through dialogue. It has quickly become one of my favorite RPGs ever and is definitely worth playing in 2025-2026 and beyond.* This review has minor spoilers for some side quests, specific encounters, and basic details about the world, but does not spoil the main quest / story beyond its early stages.
