New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has opposed RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s planned Madison Square Garden event, saying he does not support the rally and describing the rise of what he called an “exclusionary” movement as deeply troubling. However, Mamdani acknowledged that the city may not have the legal authority to cancel the privately organised event, which is scheduled for August 29 and is expected to draw around 5,000 members of the Indian diaspora. Bhagwat’s US visit comes as part of the RSS’s centenary-year global outreach programme, while protests and calls to cancel the New York event have already emerged from several interfaith and civil-rights groups. The controversy has now put Mamdani, Bhagwat, the RSS and India’s political debate at the centre of a growing New York row.---
