A rendere lo stretto geograficamente inattaccabile è la sua conformazione: un passaggio a ferro di cavallo, abbastanza stretto da obbligare ogni imbarcazione a rallentare, costeggiando per chilometri il territorio iraniano. Secondo lo scrittore, nato in Transnistria e di origini siberiane, Nicolai Lilin, "dal punto di vista geografico è praticamente impossibile impedire all'Iran di controllare lo Stretto di Hormuz" e "non esiste un modo di spostare l'Iran da quel punto geografico".
