The story behind The Other Side of Sea
During our concerts, most of the songs you hear are ones Marijn and I wrote together, often with other talented musicians. But there is one song in our setlist that carries a very different story.The Other Side of Sea is a piece Marijn wrote long before we ever met, during a time when he was chronically ill. While confined to bed, he taught himself how to play guitar, lying down with the instrument resting on his chest. Writing this song became his way of holding on to hope for a life beyond the illness.
When I first heard it, I was deeply moved. I asked him, “Would you be open to playing this song live together?”
He said, “Yes, but only if we make it a little bit ours. Maybe you could write a new piano part for it?”
I agreed, full of energy. But when I sat down in the studio, I felt the weight of what this song meant to him. Nothing I tried felt quite right. The hours passed, the night deepened, until at 6:30 in the morning, something finally came through. It did not feel like it came from me. It felt like something I had the privilege to receive.
I sent it to him right away but could not sleep, nervous about what he was going to think of it. I messaged him: “Before you have breakfast, would you please check your email?”
Minutes later, his reply came: “Jorrit, I have heard it. It is beautiful. You have done the song justice. This is how we will play it.”
