VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
Ladies and gentlemen, when Modi ji became the Prime Minister of India, he promised that corruption would be eliminated from the country. But unfortunately, even today India is infested with corruption. Whether news channels report these scandals or not, corruption still exists at every level—from traffic police to ministers where bribes are routinely taken. So even after 10 years of Modi ji’s governance, India remains one of the most corrupt nations in the world. Transparency International ranks India 96th out of 180 countries, and the World Justice Project ranks India 79th out of 142 countries. While many people dismiss international rankings as Western propaganda, we can trust our own eyes to see how deep corruption runs in India, especially during election seasons when money is distributed left, right, and centre.
For nearly 70 years, we have been trying to answer the same question: how do you eliminate corruption from India? Surprisingly, the answer lies in Singapore. At one point, Singapore was among the most corrupt nations in the world. In fact, there was a rate card for bribes—you could pay just 20 dollars to run an illegal gambling den, similar to the hafta system in India. Singapore also witnessed massive communal riots, 70% of its population lived in overcrowded and squalid slums, the Singapore River smelled of rotting garbage like the nalas of Mumbai today, and most of the population lived in poverty.
Then came a hero, one who is still considered among the greatest leaders of modern history Lee Kuan Yew. When Lee Kuan Yew became the Prime Minister of Singapore, the country had no mass labour like China, no industries, no oil, no land, no coal, no sand, and not even enough fresh water for its population. History shows that when there is poverty and scarcity, people seek the shortest route to money and that route is corruption. Yet Lee Kuan Yew achieved something miraculous: Singapore’s per capita income rose from 400 to 90,000, the Singapore River became a tourist hotspot, and only one major riot occurred in the last 50 years.
So the real question is: how did Lee Kuan Yew eliminate corruption in a poor nation, what strategies made Singapore corruption-free, and what lessons must Indian politicians learn from Singapore’s rise?
