💈 Haircut & Punch Perm by Old School 84-Year-Old Barber in Mojiko, Japan at Barber Shop Matsunaga 💇🏻♂️Our last stop in Japan was the small town of Mojiko, famous for it’s restored train station that was built in 1914 and their baked curry ✨
We had the opportunity to visit a colorful barber named Yoshikazu Matsunaga 🙌🏼 He has been barbering for 60 years and is famous for his punch perms! So I got to try a punch perm :)
In the 1960s, Japan’s barbershops were facing a serious problem. Inspired by The Beatles and the growing popularity of long hair, more Japanese men were growing their hair out and visiting barbers less often.
So the beauty industry began looking for ways to bring men back into the barbershop 💈
One idea was to take the round iron used for perming short hair, improve it, and develop a faster and more efficient way to create a new men’s hairstyle 🎩
That experiment eventually led to the Punch Perm which had a “powerful look.”
“At its peak, as many as 70% of male customers at barbershops in Kitakyushu ordered punch perms.” Men started coming back through the doors so the barbershops came back to life!
Mr. Matsunaga was born in 1942 but jokingly tells everyone he is 63 😆 The best part about barbering? He loves meeting people and staying healthy ❤️
Over time, Mr. Matsunaga gradually changed his style becoming more colorful and fashionable 👨🏼🎨 He showed us his Louis Vuitton bag that he adorned with colorful paint splatters 🎨
He is also a second-generation barber. His parents had the shop in this location since about 1950 💈
The inspiration for the barbershop decor was to recreate the atmosphere of a bar. Mr. Matsunaga says he used to regularly go to bars, although he doesn’t really drink much. His father died at a young age and drank a lot. So he learned from his dad not to do that. Today, he is 84 years old and still behind the chair meeting people and doing what he loves❣️
