Der Kadaver trieb auf dem Rücken nahe der Fahrrinne und wurde anschließend mit einem Kran aus dem Wasser gehievt. Ob es sich um den Wal handelt, der wenige Tage zuvor in Polen und möglicherweise auch bei Kiel und Wismar gesichtet wurde, ist noch unklar. Eine Obduktion soll die Todesursache klären und zeigen, ob Krankheiten oder Verletzungen eine Rolle spielten
