Managing in Technology: The Skills the Job Demands

Managing in a technology environment is not a fixed role. The skills required early on are very different from those needed when overseeing multiple teams, systems, and business priorities. As technology continues to shift, so does the job. Data, AI, and digital infrastructure are no longer niche areas but core to how organisations operate, making the role more complex and more critical than ever.

With each transition, new capabilities come into play. This includes product and customer thinking, commercial judgement on vendors and investments, and the ability to lead across both technical and non-technical teams. It also calls for working knowledge of data, AI, and operations, along with the ability to manage delivery and change at scale. Some organisations build these capabilities well, but many do so unevenly, leaving managers to learn on the job as expectations continue to evolve.

In this session, Ms Nadine Yap, along with two experienced practitioners, Mr Chak Kong Soon and Ms Pauline Tan, share how the role has changed over the decades, from the early days of digital infrastructure to today’s challenges in AI governance and organisational capability building. The discussion will focus on what the job really requires at different stages, where managers often feel underprepared, and how both organisations and individuals can better keep pace with what the role demands.
