Kings and Generals' historical animated documentary series covering the Pacific War continues with a video on the Island hopping campaign - the strategy that defeated Japan in the Pacific War. After Midway and Guadalcanal, the United States opens a new road across the Pacific: Nimitz’s Central Pacific island-hopping campaign. This episode follows the brutal first steps through the Gilbert and Marshall Islands, where American naval power, Marines, Army troops, carriers, battleships, and amphibious vehicles collide with Japan’s fortified atolls. Operation Galvanic begins with the invasions of Makin and Tarawa, where reefs, tides, poor intelligence, and determined Japanese defenses turn the beaches into killing grounds. The lessons paid for in blood then shape Operation Flintlock, as the Americans bypass stronger positions, strike Kwajalein, seize Majuro, and overwhelm Roi-Namur. The campaign expands with Operation Hailstone, the devastating carrier raid on Truk, before the final battles for Eniwetok and Parry open the way toward the Marianas. Along the way, the video explains why the Central Pacific route mattered, how American industry changed the balance at sea, and why Japan’s island fortress strategy could not stop the advance. From Tarawa’s slaughter to Kwajalein’s breakthrough, this is the story of how the United States cracked Japan’s outer defensive perimeter and transformed island hopping into the main Allied path toward victory in the Pacific War, in one of history’s hardest amphibious learning curves ever attempted.
