Meditating with Movies: The Scenic Route To Healing | DeVante Love | TEDxTufts

NOTE FROM TED: This talk only represents the speaker’s spiritual views, beliefs, and interpretation of meditation, consciousness, and healing. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. In their TEDx talk, DeVante asks: What if films could be mirrors and portals that reveal deeper truths and guide our healing? Through personal stories, like how Black Panther taught them to embrace their expressive queer identity and how Wonka helped them retrieve a business idea they'd suppressed, DeVante demonstrates the power of what they call
cinema meditation. Their three-step process is straightforward: notice your body's reactions before the film, allow yourself to fully respond during it, and
write a reflective letter afterward. This approach, rooted in the concept of interdependence (needing others to truly see ourselves), turns passive entertainment into active self-discovery. DeVante's work, which forms the basis of their upcoming book Netflix and Heal, offers a practical way to slow down,
engage deeply with media, and reconnect with neglected parts of ourselves. DeVante Love (they/them) is an Afroindigenous lay monk, a psychoanalyst, and PhD candidate in Tufts' Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies Department. Their research explores how healing and liberation become possible through our everyday performances…from the movies/TV we watch to the ways we move our bodies.

DeVante holds a master's in Clinical Psychology, during which they developed a Depth Psychological framework that transforms everyday hobbies like watching movies or working out into contemplative practices supporting the development of emotional and spiritual intelligence. This research inspired their upcoming book, Netflix and Heal: A Monk's Guide to Inner Peace Through Movies, which guides readers through cinema therapy techniques and spiritual practices that turn movie-watching into a healing journey. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me
