Narcissism exists on a spectrum, and people can show both grandiose behaviors and more vulnerable reactions involving insecurity, shame, sensitivity, or fear of rejection. The deeper issue is that some people with strong narcissistic patterns rely heavily on outside validation to maintain their sense of worth. Praise makes them feel important, criticism can feel deeply threatening, and rejection may be experienced as much more than an ordinary disappointment. When that outside validation becomes uncertain, the image they worked so hard to build can suddenly become much harder to maintain.
