Ramgopal Rao, Group Vice-Chancellor, BITS Pilani, chaired by Dr. Abhilasha Gaur, CEO, Nasscom SSC. They discussed the commercialization gap between prototype and product, and why it remains the hardest part of India's Deeptech journey to own.
The TRL 3-to-6 stage is where Indian Deeptech loses momentum: academia stops at proof of concept, industry waits for a market-ready prototype, and nothing bridges the two, leaving founders to build teams and raise capital alone. One proposed fix is translational centers funded and staffed at industry salaries, though who should own them, universities, industry, capital, or some shared structure, remains unresolved.
Patent data reflects the same gap: India ranks sixth globally for filings, but a metrics-driven system rewards publication over commercial relevance, so most patents never reach a market. India has the research output. What it lacks is the institutional layer that turns that output into deployable technology.
