Robert Gates testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee in 1991
USA: President Bush's nominee to head the CIA is facing mounting evidence, accumulated over the past three weeks during Senate hearings, that he misled Congress, corrupted intelligence calculations, and intimidated his subordinates. Robert Gates has testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee to defend himself against the accusations. His career hinges on the credibility of his answers, as skepticism is growing in the Senate. The Intelligence Committee has compiled at least six instances of evidence suggesting that Gates was informed about the diversion of funds from arms sales to Iran to the Contras. Regarding his relationships with CIA analysts and the reports he submitted, particularly concerning the Soviet Union, his opinions were used to shape policy. He is accused of distorting facts to influence foreign policymakers to his own ends. The accusation that he deliberately distorts the conclusions of documents when handing them over to the country's political leaders is completely false, Gates said.
