Der 86-jährige Chamenei ist der Führer des Iran seit Ayatollah Khomeini im Jahr 1989 starb. Chamenei regierte das Land trotz jahrelanger Sanktionen, trotz des internationalen Drucks und trotz der innenpolitischen Proteste, die zuletzt 2022 und 2023 brutal niedergeschlagen wurden.
Die Frage seiner Nachfolge stellt sich im Iran angesichts seines Alters schon lange. Aber seine nächsten Schritte werden eine entscheidende Auswirkung haben auf das schiitische Mullah-System, das seit der Islamischen Revolution von 1979 den Iran beherrscht.
