Die Nordsee liegt ruhig, als der dänische Fischer Poul Godtfredsen am Morgen des 18. August 1993 ein Frachtschiff am Horizont entdeckt, das dort nicht sein sollte. Als der Fischer näher kommt, liest er auf dem blauen Bug den Namen MS Bärbel, wenig später findet er einen russischen Matrosen in einer Rettungsinsel. Er ist ganz allein,mit Geld im Gepäck und einer Geschichte, die so unglaublich klingt, dass sie fast unmöglich wahr sein kann-Inhalt:
