Plastic on Trial | Sumona Majumdar | TEDxGreatPacificGarbagePatch
Lawsuits have played a big role in overcoming “impossible” problems—like tobacco, asbestos, and lead paint—and plastic is now at a similar turning point. Drawing on cases across the entire plastic life cycle, in this TEDx talk, Sumona Majumdar describes how litigation is exposing industry deception, shifting responsibility from individuals to corporations, and preventing new harm. She argues that litigation combined with science, technology, policy, communications, and coalition-building can help drive the cultural shift needed to move toward a future free from plastic pollution. Sumona Majumdar (she/her) is the chief executive officer of Earth Island Institute, and she brings a deep commitment to fostering a more just and sustainable planet where all beings can thrive. Prior to this role, she served as the organization’s general counsel and led groundbreaking lawsuits against plastic producers and corporate greenwashing. Sumona is also the mother of two young children, who are an endless source of joy and fuel her dedication to this work. Sumona’s favorite form of transportation is a bicycle; she finds mental clarity in the outdoors; and she recently rediscovered her passion for roller skating. Before joining Earth Island, Sumona spent seven years enforcing environmental laws with the U.S. Department of Justice. Sumona holds a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, obtained a B.S. from the School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan, and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
