Modern warfare is exposing a growing gap between what humans can do and what conflict now demands of them. A single operator may be responsible for tracking dozens of threats, coordinating multiple systems, and making critical decisions for hours without rest. As drones become cheaper, more numerous, and increasingly autonomous, the limiting factor is often no longer technology itself, but the cognitive capacity of the people trying to use it.

This talk examines how that gap is driving the rapid adoption of AI on the battlefield and why many assumptions about military autonomy miss the mark. Drawing on firsthand experience working alongside drone operators in Ukraine, I argue that the most effective AI systems are not novel, but the ones designed around operational bottlenecks. The lesson extends beyond defense: transformative technology emerges not from maximizing capability, but from understanding the problem it aims to solve, and the humans it is meant to support.

Taras Yushchenko is a recent graduate of MIT with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. As a researcher with both the MIT Wright Brothers Wind Tunnel and the Autonomy and Embedded Robotics Accelerated (AERA) Laboratory, his work has focused on UAV design, autonomous navigation, and control systems.

The full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine significantly influenced the direction of his research, leading him to focus on GPS-denied operations, multi-agent vehicle coordination, and vision-based navigation. Building on both his academic work and firsthand experience supporting research efforts in Ukraine, Taras will continue his studies as a Master’s student in Aerospace Engineering at Stanford University.
