Mozart: Late Symphonies (35 36 38 40 41)

First comes the Symphony No. 35 in D Major, K. 385 “Haffner,” written in 1782 for the Haffner family’s ennoblement festivities—music that strides in with ceremonial sparkle, then eases into an elegant Andante and a whirlwind finale.
On the road a year later, Mozart dashes off the Symphony No. 36 in C Major, K. 425 “Linz” in just four days, opening with a stately slow introduction before the music bursts into athletic life.
The Symphony No. 38 in D Major, K. 504 “Prague” is bolder still: three movements only—no minuet—with a brooding introduction that blossoms into theatrical dynamism, premiered to rapturous audiences in Prague in January 1787.
Storm clouds gather in the Symphony No. 40 in G Minor, K. 550, one of Mozart’s only two minor-key symphonies; he later revised it to include clarinets, deepening its dark glow while keeping the music urgently on the move.
Finally, the Symphony No. 41 in C Major, K. 551 “Jupiter” crowns the journey (1788) with exuberant grandeur and a finale where melodies interlock in exhilarating counterpoint.
From celebration to storm to sunburst, the arc is vivid and humane. Not homework—just great storytelling in sound.
