Hantavirus Cruise Ship Outbreak Triggers Concern in Spain, UK, France, Australia | Spotlight | N18G

A deadly hantavirus outbreak aboard the Dutch-flagged cruise ship MV Hondius has triggered a global health response after passengers from the United States and France tested positive following evacuation from Spain's Canary Islands. The outbreak has already claimed three lives and prompted countries including Britain, Australia, Greece and France to begin quarantine, contact tracing and monitoring operations. Health officials confirmed that the cases involve the Andes strain of hantavirus, the only known variant capable of limited human-to-human transmission. The World Health Organisation has advised a 42-day monitoring period for exposed individuals but insists the virus is very different from COVID-19 and poses a low global public health risk. Experts say hantavirus spreads far less easily and typically requires close, prolonged contact rather than casual airborne exposure.
