Indra Chalisa | इन्द्र चालीसा | A Chant for Courage | Awadhi

इन्द्र चालीसा is a chant for courage, to one of the oldest gods of Hinduism.

Indra is the most invoked deity in the Rigveda. Roughly a quarter of its 1,028 hymns call his name, more than Agni, more than Vishnu, more than anyone. He breaks the serpent that dams the rivers, splits the cave that hides the light, and rides into battle beside mortal kings as a friend, not a master. And then, somewhere across three thousand years, we stopped singing to him. Nearly every major deity today has a Chalisa. Indra has none. No living devotional tradition, no forty verses, nothing to chant.

This is an attempt to write him one.

It is sung for strength of arm, for steadiness under pressure, and for the shedding of servility. The old promise of the thunder-god runs through it: whoever holds Indra in the heart is never again called a coward. And its theology is Indra's own, i.e. desire is not a sin here. काम न पाप, काम जगमूला. Without wanting to bloom, no flower ever bloomed.

Every deed in these verses is inspired from the Rigveda itself. From Vritra and the seven rivers, the cave of Vala, Dadhichi's bones, the hundred forts of Shambara, the battle of the ten kings, the friendships with Kutsa and Sudas. Nothing is fiction. It has only been re-sung in a more popular register.
