Iran wants to avoid giving Trump excuse to attack again: Analysis
Iran’s judiciary said today that Iranian protesters need to be separated into three groups at the moment, says Foad Izadi, a professor at the University of Tehran.“One group is the people who actually committed murder. The second group are people who burned mosques, burned shops. And the third group are people who just participated,” he told Al Jazeera, speaking from Iran’s capital. “And I think Iran’s judiciary is going to look at each case individually.”
He added, “All of these people will have attorneys, and one thing that I can tell you is that they want to make sure that the number of people who are killed is minimised as much as possible because they don’t want to give Trump an excuse to attack Iran again.”
Meanwhile, Trump’s threats of military intervention over the killing of protesters and their potential executions, as he has claimed, are likely.
“Iranians don’t believe him when he talks about human rights. They do believe him when he talks about attacking Iran,” said Izadi.
