I Failed to Find My Indian Wife a Balochi Suit in PAKISTAN!

I went shopping in Karachi, Pakistan, with one mission: find a beautiful Balochi suit for my Indian wife, Manisha Malik.

Manisha is passionate about desi fashion, but there was one thing missing from her collection: a proper Balochi suit. She didn't want a cheap, machine-made outfit. She wanted something special, with beautiful embroidery and stitching that represented the traditional craftsmanship of Balochistan.

So I headed into some of Karachi's busiest traditional markets to see if I could find one.

First stop was Zainab Market in Saddar, one of Karachi's best-known shopping markets. Zainab Market is a great place to visit if you're looking for affordable clothing, export-surplus garments, leather jackets and bags, traditional clothing, shawls, jewellery, handicrafts and other souvenirs. It's a busy maze of small shops, so don't be afraid to explore beyond the first shops you see.

If you're visiting Karachi as a tourist and want to shop for clothes, Zainab Market is worth putting on your list. There are plenty of bargains to be found, and bargaining is part of the experience. Take your time, compare prices between shops and inspect clothing carefully before buying. If you're looking for leather, there are also many leather shops in and around the market.

But Zainab Market wasn't quite what I was looking for. Most of the Balochi suits I found were machine-made, while I was specifically looking for something handmade.

So I headed to Lee Market, also known as Lea Market, in the older part of Karachi.

Lee Market is a completely different experience. It's a historic, extremely busy traditional market with a huge variety of businesses packed around its famous clock tower. The surrounding area is known for vegetables, fruit, dates, tea, spices, shoes, cloth, tailoring and wholesale trade, and there are plenty of smaller markets and shops connected to the area.

For tourists, this is the kind of place where it's worth getting away from the modern shopping malls and seeing how Karachi's traditional markets actually work.

In Lee Market I found shops selling Balochi and Afghani clothing, cloth stores, tailors making shalwar kameez, shoe sellers and people doing embroidery and stitching. I even found people working on garments by hand.

The problem? Finding a really high-quality handmade Balochi suit turned out to be much harder than I expected.

Eventually I found Balochi suits that looked great, but most were machine-made. One shop had a suit where some of the mirror work was done manually, but the rest of the embroidery was machine-made. That's not quite what Manisha wanted.

So did I succeed?

Not really. I failed to find the handmade Balochi suit I was looking for!

If you're travelling to Karachi and want to buy clothes, traditional Pakistani clothing or souvenirs, I hope this video gives you some ideas about where to start. And if you know a shop, market or artisan in Karachi where Manisha can find a genuinely beautiful handmade Balochi suit, please tell me in the comments!
