Bangladesh is set for a major political transition as Tarique Rahman, chief of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), prepares to take the oath as Prime Minister following a sweeping election victory. According to reports, the oath-taking ceremony is expected to take place by February 17. The February 12 general election marked the first national poll since the 2024 uprising and has been described as historic. Rahman hailed the BNP’s win as a “victory for democracy,” saying the triumph belongs to the people who "sacrificed for democracy". He called for national unity ahead of the oath-taking. Rahman’s BNP also thanked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his congratulatory message and expressed interest in advancing multifaceted ties with India. The BNP secured 212 seats out of 299 in alliance with its partners, while the Jamaat-e-Islami alliance won 77 seats.
