Carney SQUEEZED as China demands tariff relief

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is urging Prime Minister Mark Carney to keep tariffs in place on Chinese-made electric vehicles, saying foreign automakers should only sell in Canada if they build cars and create jobs here. Ford says dumping cheap vehicles into the market would hurt Canadian and American workers.

The comments come as Carney is in China for trade talks, where Beijing is pressing Canada to drop EV tariffs in exchange for lifting levies on Canadian canola and seafood. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says negotiations are ongoing and “productive.”

Meanwhile, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew is pushing back against Ford’s threat to remove Crown Royal from LCBO shelves, warning it would target jobs in another province and undermine a “Team Canada” approach.

Adding to the uncertainty, U.S. President Donald Trump cast doubt on the future of the USMCA, calling the trade deal irrelevant and reiterating his desire to see cars built in the United States—not Canada or Mexico.
