Is lasting peace really possible? | DW Documentary
How does a war end, how can peace succeed? Nobel Peace Prize winners, diplomats, negotiators, and former guerrillas talk about how they have succeeded and failed when it comes to mediating. What can we learn when it comes to today's wars? How do enemies begin to talk to each other? This is perhaps the most difficult question on the road to peace. The documentary focuses on conflicts in Colombia, South Africa, and Afghanistan, as well as on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Peace now reigns in Colombia and South Africa - but in both cases, it is fragile. In Colombia in particular, after years of calm, violence by the National Liberation Army, the ELN, and dissidents of the former FARC guerilla movement was on the rise in 2025. In Afghanistan, the vision of peace for all has failed.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has also been marked by failed negotiations. The Oslo Peace Accords seemed to bring Palestinians and Israelis closer to a lasting solution. But they failed, just as Camp David had in 2000. After the October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, in which more than 1,200 people were killed and some 250 were taken hostage, followed by Israel's war against Gaza, leaving tens of thousands dead, the conflict seemed more intractable than ever. Since October 10, 2025, following Israeli and Hamas agreement to US President Donald Trump's 20-point plan, there has been a ceasefire. The last surviving hostages have returned to Israel. Will it now be possible to achieve lasting peace?
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, Afghan negotiator Fatima Gailani, former Israeli Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami, and long-time EU Foreign Affairs Representative Federica Mogherini provide insights into their successes. One lesson many agree on: Genuine peace is usually only possible when perpetrators acknowledge their guilt and come to terms with it.
