At the extreme north of the British Isles sits the Scottish county of Orkney, an archipelago of more than 70 islands, of which about 20 are inhabited by humans. The county is sometimes referred to as the Orkneys, or the Orkney Islands, though such reference has fallen into disfavor in Scotland. The recorded history of the region goes back centuries.
