Scapa Flow: Diving Mecca of Scotland

At the extreme north of the British Isles sits the Scottish county of Orkney, an archipelago of more than 70 islands, of which about 20 are inhabited by humans. The county is sometimes referred to as the Orkneys, or the Orkney Islands, though such reference has fallen into disfavor in Scotland. The recorded history of the region goes back centuries. The islands were known to the Norse explorers known collectively as the Vikings, and possession of the archipelago changed hands between Celts, Picts, Norse, Danes, and others.
