Il No ha prevalso con il 52,8% contro il 47,2% del Sì, con un'affluenza altissima, oltre l'82%. Il voto - solo consultivo, dato che l'Islanda resta comunque dentro lo Spazio economico europeo e Schengen - ha visto il Sì imporsi unicamente nei collegi della capitale Reykjavík, mentre le circoscrizioni costiere e rurali hanno ribaltato il risultato.
Il nodo principale, come già nel tentativo di adesione interrotto nel 2013, è stato quello della pesca, settore che pesa in modo determinante sulle esportazioni islandesi: circa il 90% delle imprese del comparto si è schierata contro la riapertura dei negoziati. La commissaria europea all'Allargamento Marta Kos aveva provato a rassicurare Reykjavík paventando possibili "soluzioni creative" sul dossier, senza però riuscire a invertire la tendenza del voto.
