Desde su regreso a la Casa Blanca, el presidente Donald Trump ha restablecido la designación de Cuba como un “Estado patrocinador del terrorismo”, ha reafirmado la decisión de mantener el embargo económico impuesto hace décadas y ha identificado a la gente cubana inmigrante como blanco de deportación. El secretario de Estado, Marco Rubio, ahora quiere ir contra el programa de salud con el que Cuba envía a trabajadores médicos y de la salud a colaborar en otros países. La isla también está entre los países afectados por la prohibición de ingreso a Estados Unidos impuesta por Trump, que entró en vigencia la semana pasada, lo que limita severamente la entrada de ciudadanos cubanos al país. Todo esto se produce en momentos en que el Gobierno de Trump está planeando trasladar a la Bahía de Guantánamo a miles de inmigrantes detenidos.
