Kings and Generals animated documentary series on the history of Rome and Antiquity continues with a video on the Second Punic War. Hannibal Barca nearly destroyed Rome — and this is the full story of how the Second Punic War became one of the most legendary conflicts in ancient history. This video follows the rise of the Barcid family after Carthage’s humiliation in the First Punic War, from Hamilcar Barca’s campaigns in Iberia to the young Hannibal’s oath never to be a friend of Rome. As Carthage rebuilds its power in Spain, Rome is distracted by Illyrian pirates and Gallic uprisings, until the crisis at Saguntum finally ignites a war that will reshape the Mediterranean. Hannibal’s answer is one of the boldest military campaigns ever attempted: instead of waiting for Rome in Iberia or Africa, he marches north, crosses the Rhone, fights through the Alps, and invades Italy with a battered but dangerous army. What follows is a chain of Roman disasters - Ticinus, Trebia, Lake Trasimene, and finally Cannae, where Hannibal delivers one of the most studied tactical victories in history. But Rome refuses to surrender. While Hannibal struggles to turn battlefield victories into final victory, the war expands across Sicily, Spain, Macedon, southern Italy, and North Africa. Syracuse falls, Tarentum changes hands, Hasdrubal marches to Italy and dies at the Metaurus, and a new Roman commander rises: Publius Cornelius Scipio. Scipio conquers New Carthage, defeats Carthaginian armies in Iberia, invades Africa, wins over Numidian allies, and forces Hannibal’s recall. At Zama, the two greatest generals of the war finally meet in the battle that decides the fate of Carthage, Rome, and the ancient Mediterranean.
