Uno dei quadri più cari al mondo è questo: si intitola «Shot Sage Blue Marilyn», raffigura una stilizzazione del volto di Marilyn Monroe ed è stato realizzato nel 1964 da Andy Warhol. Nel 2022 è stato venduto all’asta da Christie’s per 195 milioni di dollari. Quando eseguì questa serigrafia, Warhol era l’artista più popolare (e chiacchierato) di New York e l’attrice, morta da due anni, riempiva ancora le cronache dei giornali con ricordi, dubbi, illazioni. Warhol allora ebbe un’idea geniale: Marilyn e altri personaggi, specie quelli del cinema, stavano diventando oggetto di una vera e propria devozione moderna, alimentata dai giornali, dalla televisione, dalla pubblicità.
Così lui decise di isolare il volto dell’attrice in un primissimo piano, come quello delle icone mariane. Warhol intuì che le immagini - come anche le cose reali di tutti i giorni - non erano più vissute e assorbite, ma consumate. E da questa straordinaria intuizione nacque il nucleo della sua opera: immagini reiterate, ripetute, sostituibili, dal valore puramente commerciale. Ogni cosa nasce, si consuma e viene rimpiazzata.
Da qualche tempo in Italia c’è un nuovo museo dove si possono scoprire meglio le opere di Warhol: nel Palazzo della Ragione di Mantova ha trovato casa la collezione di Ileana Sonnabend, mercante, gallerista ma soprattutto talent scout in America dagli Anni Sessanta in poi.
