Mahkamah Konstitusi (MK) memutuskan mulai 2029, keserentakan penyelenggaraan pemilihan umum yang konstitusional adalah dengan memisahkan penyelenggaraan pemilu anggota DPR, DPD, dan presiden/wakil presiden dengan penyelenggaraan pemilu anggota DPRD provinsi/kabupaten/kota serta gubernur/wakil gubernur, bupati/wakil bupati, dan walikota/wakil walikota (Pemilu daerah atau lokal).Sehingga, Pemilu serentak yang selama ini dikenal sebagai “Pemilu 5 (lima) kotak” tidak lagi berlaku.
Putusan ini tentu tidak serta merta diterima oleh para elite partai politik terutama yang berada di parlemen.
Bahkan muncul wacana adanya Amandemen Undang-Undang Dasar 1945 dan pembentukan Pansus terkait putusan MK tersebut.
