Peristiwa terjadi ketika kegiatan belajar-mengajar berlangsung sekira pukul 10.00 waktu setempat.
Total ada 11 korban tewas, sebanyak enam diantaranya perempuan, tiga laki-laki, dan satu orang guru.
Sedangkan satu orang adalah pelaku penembakan yang bunuh diri di toilet sekolah.
Diketahui pelaku berusia 21 tahun merupakan mantan murid sekolah tersebut yang pernah tidak lulus ujian dan mengalami bullying semasa pendidikannya.
Bahkan, pelaku dilaporkan membeli senjata api ilegal sehari sebelum peristiwa tersebut.
Polisi dapat menghentikan kejadian dalam waktu 17 menit setelah tiba di lokasi kejadian.
“Kengerian ini tak bisa diungkapkan dengan kata-kata,” ungkap Presiden Austria Alexande Van der Bellen.
Atas kejadian penembakan, bendera setengah tiang dikibarkan di Istana Hofburg, kediaman resmi presiden di Wina.
Selain itu, pemerintah juga menetapkan tiga hari berkabung nasional.
