Les sanglots, c'est un truc un peu gênant. On a le hoquet, on pleure, on parle avec une voix grotesque. Bref, ce sont des moments d'émotion qui semblent aux antipodes de la raison. C'est justement là le point de départ de la philosophe Estelle Ferrarese, qui enseigne à l'université de Picardie. Dans son livre, Une philosophie des sanglots, elle propose de méditer sur ce spasme de tristesse qui nous empêche de parler autant que de réfléchir.
Estelle Ferrarese se saisit de ce sujet en apparence insolite comme d'une occasion de considérer autrement notre impuissance. Elle remonte toute notre histoire culturelle jusqu'à l'Antiquité pour voir ce qui se cache derrière l'idée que les pleurs constituaient d'abord un attribut féminin. Alors, pourquoi les sanglots font-ils vaciller la raison ? Comment penser l'impuissance qu'ils nous infligent ? Pourquoi éclate-t-on en sanglots ?
