Penjaga Pantai mengatakan dalam sebuah pernyataan bahwa mereka mendeteksi dan mencegat kapal-kapal Filipina setelah mereka mengabaikan peringatan.
Memaksa mereka untuk menjauh, dalam sebuah operasi yang mereka gambarkan sebagai
profesional, standar, sah, dan legal.
Namun dikabarkan, dua kapal China saling bertabrakan saat mengejar kapal patroli Filipina.
Kabar ini diungkapkan oleh Juru bicara Penjaga Pantai Filipina, Komodor Jay Tarriela.
Ia mengatakan, bahwa insiden terjadi di dekat Beting Scarborough, wilayah yang menjadi sengketa kedua negara.
Saat itu, kapal patroli Filipina sedang mengawal distribusi bantuan bagi para nelayan di area tersebut.
Kapal penjaga pantai China, CCG 3104 yang melihat hal itu langsung melakukan pengejaran dengan kecepatan tinggi.
Bahkan, kapal tersebut melakukan manuver berisiko dari sisi kanan kapal milik Filipina.
Hal ini menyebabkan tabrakan dengan kapal perang Angkatan Laut PLA (Tentara Pembebasan Rakyat).
Suara benturan keras terdengar saat kedua kapal tersebut bertabrakan.
Menurut Tarriela, tabrakan itu menimbulkan kerusakan signifikan pada haluan kapal CCG hingga dinyatakan tidak layak melaut.
Namun, awak kapal China tidak merespons tawaran bantuan dari pihak Filipina.
