How Photographers Make Photos Look Like A Fairy Tale
In this Photoshop tutorial I'll show you how to create a dreamy, soft photo effect on a portrait using only adjustment layers — no plugins, no complicated masking, no third-party tools. You'll learn how to reduce contrast and add light using Shadows and Highlights, lift the shadows across all channels using a Curves adjustment with a raised output floor, color the deepest shadows with Selective Color, and enhance skin tones, greens and yellows with Hue/Saturation channel editing.
Then we'll get into the fun part — creating warm dreamy glows of light using Radial Gradient fill layers on Soft Light and Screen blend modes, adding a Solid Color layer on Exclusion for a subtle cinematic color cast, and painting extra light directly onto the face using a Levels adjustment with an inverted layer mask and a soft brush.
To finish, I'll show you an optional step to take the dreaminess even further — a Field Blur stamp layer on Soft Light that adds a beautiful soft glow across the entire image.
This effect works on pretty much any portrait, whether you're shooting outdoors, in a studio, or with natural light — and the whole thing takes under 15 minutes once you know the steps.
