Trying something different with the release schedule of these videos. Normally I keep the final compilation to the end, but by that stage there's already several channels with every boss being posted right on release, and this game has already included appearances of most bosses in the recent trailer. So this time I'll be posting the final compilation first without major spoilers in the thumbnail (only those included in the trailer) for those who are interested. After that I'll follow my normal schedule of posting them individually over the next while, alongside many guides.
As for my thoughts on the game: I had a great time with it overall. The combat is satisfying and unique in the first person perspective. It works surprisingly well and feels very comfortable. I remember the first alpha test and it felt slightly awkward due to the first person perspective and reading enemy attacks or distance. The second demo it felt much better but not perfect. And now with the full release and seeing all the game has to offer, it all felt great to me.
The bosses themselves I found to be enjoyable, but personally I think were very much on the easy side, even if I've seen mixed opinions on that. I think if you focus on parrying and using the rapier, they all tend to fall over quite quickly due to how quickly the stagger builds up. It's to the point I feel like every boss could have their health doubled and they'd still feel good to fight against. There were also certain outliers like the Blunderbuss on early bosses which would do massive damage to weakspots despite no upgrades. And even in later fights I'd intentionally not use abilities or hold off to see more of their moveset.
The biggest standout to me was both the world design and audio. The most impressive thing about Fromsoft games compared to other soulslikes is how the world is interconnected and unlocking shortcuts that all build together. There aren't many games that get this design right, but overall I felt Valor Mortis excelled in that regard. There's areas that involve only a small few houses in a town, yet they manage to fit in multiple different pathways that weave together within a single building. And it nails that feeling of unlocking a shortcut and realising "ah, that's where it links up".
The audio design is also excellent, with spatial audio being particularly good. I could always tell where enemies were despite the first person perspective, as you'd hear their audio quite clearly. It initially impressed me during the very first mission where there's cannon fire in the distance and it just felt spot on.
With regards to performance and bugs, the performance overall was quite solid. I didn't have any major performance issues at all with 4k native max settings, a few stutters in some areas but overall it was quite smooth. I had a few minor bugs that I ran into, but the devs have been very responsive in patching them out, which I think is always a good sign. There was a little bit of jank on some of the bosses too which you can see in the video, but I'm sure they'll also be addressed in time.
Finally, I felt the length of the game was pretty spot spot on, and it being a more linear approach was very welcomed. There's been a lot of open world games recently, so it's nice to have one that isn't. The length felt about right, as not every game needs to be 40+ hours, but I will say the ending section did feel kind of abrupt. It felt like maybe there was room for another chapter to close it out a bit better.
Overall it's a game I can definitely recommend. I had a lot of fun with it, the combat is satisfying and responsive, the world design and map layout is excellent, and I never grew tired of it during my playthrough. There are some parts that could use a little polish, and bosses could be tweaked to be more difficult, but overall it was a very positive experience.
