Perfect Skin Tones With the Camera Raw Vectorscope
There's a brand new tool hiding inside Camera Raw called the Vectorscope, and it finally gives you an accurate, measurable way to nail skin tone instead of trusting your eyes, which change with every monitor and every room you edit in.In this tutorial, we break down how to turn on the Vectorscope and Skin Tone Indicator, read Lab Color values with the Color Sampler tool, mask out just the skin using Select People, and correct color in the right order -- Temperature, then Tint, then Saturation -- until your skin tone lands right on the line. We also cover what to do when Photoshop's AI can't find your subject, and how to blend a "perfect" correction back in with natural warmth using the mask's Amount slider. THE STEPS
1. Right-click your histogram in Camera Raw and turn on Vector Scope, Skin Tone Indicator, and the Lab Color readout
2. Use Select People to mask just the facial and body skin so the vectorscope reads skin tone only
3. Always correct Exposure and Contrast first -- they shift color before you ever touch the vectorscope
4. Adjust Temperature first, then Tint, then Saturation, watching the dots move onto the skin tone line
5. Drop a few Color Sampler points directly on skin so you can see exactly where it sits
6. Pull the mask's Amount slider back to blend your correction with the photo's natural warmth
7. When Select People can't find your subject, paint a mask with the Brush tool and intersect it with Color Range
