Землетрясения не просто внезапно возникают — сначала они дают о себе знать шепотом. Ученые недавно выявили таинственную скрытую стадию до того, как начинает трясти землю: «тихое ползание». Во время этой фазы тектонические плиты трутся друг о друга так медленно и тихо, что никто этого не чувствует — но стрессы втайне накапливаются. В лабораторных экспериментах с плексигласом исследователи воссоздали поведение земных плит. Они наблюдали, как крошечные трещины, называемые «фронтами зарождения», продвигаются вперед под давлением. Сначала они движутся как ленивые тени. Но когда они становятся достаточно большими, они внезапно ускоряются, высвобождая взрывную силу, которую мы знаем как землетрясение. Это открытие может быть нашим лучшим шансом расшифровать скрытые послания Земли до того, как разразится катастрофа.
