En décembre 2022, l’Union européenne décide pour la première fois de son histoire de geler des fonds destinés à un Etat membre : la Hongrie. Le pays gouverné par Viktor Orban est notamment critiqué pour des problèmes de passation de marchés publics, de conflits d’intérêts et de corruption. La rédaction de Sources décrypte ce système à travers le parcours de l’un des principaux acteurs de l’économie hongroise, Lőrinc Mészáros. Ancien plombier et ami d’enfance de Viktor Orbán, il est devenu en quelques années l’homme le plus riche de Hongrie. La rédaction s’est intéressée à des subventions généreusement distribuées et à des marchés publics opaques, profitant à des hommes d’affaires proches du pouvoir. Un endroit en particulier symbolise ces dérives : Felcsút, le village natal de Viktor Orbán et Lőrinc Mészáros, qui a vu se multiplier les méga-projets, y compris certains financés par l’Union européenne.
