História:
Johnnie adora o seu comboio ("O General") e Annabelle Lee. Quando a Guerra Civil começa, ele é recusado ao serviço porque é mais valioso como engenheiro. Annabelle pensa que é porque ele é um cobarde. Os espiões da União capturam o General com Annabelle a bordo. Johnnie tem de resgatar ambos os seus amores.

"Há muito tempo que não me divertia tanto a ver um filme. O General é uma comédia silenciosa (na sua maioria slapstick) sobre Johnny Gray, um maquinista de comboios com dois amores: o seu motor e Annabelle Lee. Annabelle largou-o rapidamente devido ao seu fracasso em alistar-se na Guerra Civil (não o aceitaram porque era demasiado valioso como engenheiro). As coisas são então aceleradas um ano, onde vemos alguns comandantes da União a planearem desviar um comboio para desencadear um plano mestre altamente sofisticado. Acontece que eles roubam o motor de Johnny, um grande erro.
Buster Keaton faz um desempenho fenomenal como Johnny. A sua cara e carácter é ideal para este tipo de comédia. Ele faz-me lembrar muito Leslie Nielsen dos filmes Naked Gun (mas, claro, menos velho). Muitas vezes ignora o que se passa à sua volta, levando a muitas gargalhadas. Isto também faz dele um personagem muito carismático.
Há inúmeras piadas relacionadas com o comboio. A primeira vem logo no início, quando vemos Johnny a ser seguido por duas crianças e uma mulher, numa linha muito semelhante a um comboio. A maior parte do filme é composta por Johnny a conduzir um comboio, quer perseguindo ou fugindo dos soldados da União. O movimento e as manobras dos comboios são belos. O trabalho de acrobacia é uma realização incrível. O final é explosivo.
O General foi muito divertido de observar. Deu-me mais gargalhadas do que a maioria das comédias modernas, e ainda por cima teve muita substância. Isto é suficiente para eu o rotular como uma das maiores comédias de sempre. Após a minha primeira visualização, tornou-se instantaneamente uma das minhas favoritas.
